Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday received a call from Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office.
According to the statement, Wickremesinghe expressed his sympathy for the widespread devastation caused by the recent floods in Pakistan and offered condolences to Prime Minister Sharif. He said that he expressed his solidarity with the government and people of Pakistan in resolutely fighting the unprecedented natural calamity.
Prime Minister Shahbaz thanked the Sri Lankan President for his compassion and support during these difficult times and briefed him about the massive destruction caused by floods and landslides across Pakistan due to unprecedented rainfall.
The Prime Minister said that the floods have caused significant loss of lives, livelihoods, livestock, crops, property and vital infrastructure.
He also briefed President Wickremesinghe on the government’s well-coordinated humanitarian response, including setting up a relief fund to which people in Pakistan and abroad can donate to flood relief efforts.
He reiterated the need to raise awareness to the international community about the magnitude of the floods that hit one-third of the country.
The Prime Minister expressed the hope that the “2022 United Nations Flash Appeal for Pakistan Flood Response” launched on August 30, 2022, will help meet the needs of relief funds and help provide faster relief to those in need. No more needed.
The Pakistani Prime Minister also stressed the vital importance of the rehabilitation and reconstruction phase.
Prime Minister Shahbaz congratulated President Wickremesinghe on being elected as the new President of Sri Lanka.
The two leaders expressed their desire to further strengthen the fraternal ties between Pakistan and Sri Lanka in areas of mutual interest, the statement said.
