In New Delhi: A day before the deadline for filing ITRs for the financial year 2021–22 closes, the department reported on Saturday that more than 4.87 crore returns had been submitted as of late evening.
Through its official Twitter account, the department sent out a public appeal to taxpayers, mostly individuals and members of the salaried class, urging them to submit their Income Tax Returns (ITRs) before the deadline.

According to the report, more than 4.52 billion ITRs for the assessment year 2022–23 have been filed as of July 29. On Saturday, however, more than 35 lakh ITR registrations were made as of 6 p.m.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), which sets tax department policy, and the finance ministry, according to officials, are constantly monitoring the ITR filing process.

A senior officer told PTI that a “war room” of technological experts working on the portal and the CBDT’s social media team, which is compiling individual and public replies to the file, are cooperating around-the-clock.

Around 4.05 crore ITRs were filed, and 3.09 crore of those were checked or authenticated by taxpayers, according to data up to July 28.

2.80 crore of these returns could have been processed, and 2.41 crore, or 86 percent, of them were, according to the data.

The web portal “http://incometax.gov.in” is where different kinds of taxpayers electronically file their ITRs.

During the most recent fiscal year 2020–2021, 5.89 crore ITRs were submitted by the extended deadline of December 31, 2021.

202-2021 Tax return 

The I-T department reported on Wednesday that as of March 15, 6.63 crore income tax returns (ITRs) have been filed for the 2020–21 fiscal year, an increase of 16.7 lakh from the tax returns filed the previous year.

For the 2020–21 fiscal year, corporate taxpayers and other taxpayers who are required to file audit reports had until March 15 to submit their ITRs. Individuals were allowed to continue until December 31, 2021.

ITR Forms 1 (Sahaj) and 4 (Sugam), which are less complex forms, are used by many small- and medium-sized taxpayers.

An individual with income of up to Rs 50 lakh who earns income from a salary, one property, or other sources may submit a sahaj (interest, etc). Individuals, HUFs, and businesses with a total annual income up to Rs. 50 lakh and with business and professional income may file an ITR-4.

In contrast to ITR-3, which is filed by individuals with income from a business or profession, ITR-5, ITR-6, and ITR 7 are filed by LLPs, corporations, and trusts, respectively.
